Artist Statement:
My sculptural work is something that has a hidden message. My sculpture is portraying that someone's outside is different from his or her inside. Not like a person's inner organs and skin, but their personalities. Like how some people say "Don't judge a book by its cover".That's exactly the message communicated through my sculpture. The choices I made with my sculpture are dark colors and the outside contrasting with light colors on the inside representing a hard exterior over a soft interior. The colors on the outside may be less attractive to the eye but, the inside is more colorful and interesting to see. I believe that's how people should be looked at, for the beautiful colors they have on the inside.
I'm hoping the materials I chose will make viewers want to really study my sculpture. I want people to either learn a lesson from the sculpture or have a new respect for others. A person could learn the lesson not to judge someone right away by how he or she first sees them. By having respect for others, a person could come to realize who they truly are on the inside.
It's wonderful to see artwork and get some sort of inspiration from it. I want my artwork to be inspirational but also be a piece that someone has to really think about to understand the hidden meaning. To me, hidden meanings in artwork are what make the piece so interesting and that's exactly what I want others to experience seeing it. Simply, I just want my artwork to be inspiring.
